Agility Program Overview

Puppy Intro Agility 1
Duration: 6-weeks
Prerequisites: Successful completion of: Puppy Kindergarten, or STAR Puppy Class, or similar, or instructor approval.

Participant Requirements: This class is only for friendly, non-reactive puppies between 5-months and 12-months of age. Handlers must help with the set-up and break-down of equipment on the course.

Required Materials: Flat buckle collar (no choke, slip, or martingale), 6 ft leash, favorite toy or two, lots and lots of soft training treats (cut into very small pieces), treat pouch or pocket for treats, water and water dish, handlers must wear tennis shoes or sneakers, a bed, mat, towel, or crate for your puppy and (optional) a chair and water for you.

Course Description: This class will introduce your puppy to the fun sport of Agility and strengthen your partnership. Motivation to learn, surface desensitization, confidence building, equipment introduction, and puppy games will help your puppy develop basic foundation Agility skills. Training techniques and exercises build on puppy basic obedience including: targeting, focus, recalls, stays, and body awareness. Building puppy confidence and enthusiasm without stress on puppy joints is paramount. No jumping will be done with puppies, poles will be on the ground, and equipment will be at low, puppy-appropriate, height.

Puppy Agility 2
Duration: 6-weeks
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Puppy Intro Agility 1 or instructor approval.

Participant Requirements: This class is only for friendly, non-reactive puppies between 6-months and 12-months of age. Handlers must help with the set-up and break-down of equipment on the course.

Required Materials: Flat buckle collar (no choke, slip, or martingale), 6 ft leash, favorite toy or two, lots and lots of soft training treats (cut into very small pieces), treat pouch or pocket for treats, water and water dish, handlers must wear tennis shoes or sneakers, a bed, mat, towel, or crate for your puppy and (optional) a chair and water for you.

Course Description: This class will further your puppy’s interest in the sport of Agility and strengthen your training partnership while continuing development of basic obedience skills necessary for Agility and confidence on Agility obstacles. No jumping will be done with puppies, poles will be on the ground or at low, puppy-appropriate, height. In further consideration for puppy safety, obstacles such as the A-Frame, Teeter, and Dog Walk will be used only at low height. Weave pole entrances may be introduced in this class, but there will not be any actual weaving done by growing puppies. Developing attention, ability to navigate with some distance from the handler, changing direction, and working short sequences will be introduced.


Puppy Agility 3

Duration: 6-weeks
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Puppy Agility 2 or instructor approval.

Participant Requirements: This class is only for friendly, non-reactive dogs between 7-months and 12-months of age. Handlers must help with the set-up and break-down of equipment on the course.

Required Materials: Flat buckle collar (no choke, slip, or martingale), 6 ft leash, favorite toy or two, lots and lots of soft training treats (cut into very small pieces), treat pouch or pocket for treats, water and water dish, handlers must wear tennis shoes or sneakers, a bed, mat, towel, or crate for your puppy and (optional) a chair and water for you.

Course Description: This class will further your puppy’s skill and enthusiasm for the sport of Agility and strengthen your training partnership. No jumping will be done with puppies, poles will be on the ground or at low, puppy-appropriate, height and obstacles such as the A-Frame, Teeter, and Dog Walk will be raised somewhat, but with puppy safety in mind, will be used at appropriately low heights for a puppy. Some weaving skills may be introduced in this class, but for puppy safety no speed will be added. Ability to navigate with increased distance from the handler, changing direction, strengthening correct contact behavior, transitioning between handler focus and obstacle focus, and working short sequences will keep your puppy improving.

Intro to Agility
Duration: 6-weeks
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Puppy Agility 3 class, or Basic Obedience class, or similar with instructor approval.
Participant Requirements: This class is only for friendly, non-reactive dogs. Dogs must be 12-months of age or older. Dogs should be able to sit, down, stay, and come on command. Handlers must help with the set-up and break-down of equipment on the course.

Required Materials: Flat buckle collar (no choke, slip, or martingale), 6 ft leash, favorite toy or two, lots and lots of soft training treats (cut into very small pieces), treat pouch or pocket for treats, water and water dish, handlers must wear tennis shoes or sneakers, a crate for your dog is required and (optional) a chair and water for you.

Course Description: This class will develop skills and introduce equipment in the sport of Agility and help strengthen your training partnership. Jumps will be at the appropriate height for the dog and obstacles such as the A-Frame, Teeter, and Dog Walk will be introduced at appropriately low heights for a newbie. Some weaving skills may be introduced in this class. Attention to foundation Agility skills, navigating obstacles with increasing confidence, and increasing focus are goals in this class. Working short sequences and learning additional handling skills such as change of direction may be added.

Beginning Agility
Duration: 6-weeks
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Intro to Agility class, or Puppy Agility 3 class, or similar with instructor approval.

Participant Requirements: This class is only for friendly, non-reactive dogs. Dogs must be 12-months of age or older. Dogs should be somewhat familiar with agility equipment and able to sit, down, stay, and come on command even while working in a distracting environment. Handlers must help with the set-up and break-down of equipment on the course.

Required Materials: Flat buckle collar (no choke, slip, or martingale), 6 ft leash, favorite toy or two, lots and lots of soft training treats (cut into very small pieces), treat pouch or pocket for treats, water and water dish, handlers must wear tennis shoes or sneakers, a crate for your dog is required and (optional) a chair and water for you.

Course Description: This class will further develop skills, confidence, and enthusiasm in the sport of Agility and help strengthen your training partnership. Jumps will be at the appropriate height for the dog and obstacles such as the A-Frame, Teeter, and Dog Walk will be raised appropriately with the dog’s level of readiness in mind. Weaving skills will be introduced in this class. Attention in this class will be on building foundation Agility skills for dog and handler, improving the dog’s ability to navigate with increased distance from the handler, changing direction, strengthening correct contact behavior, transitioning between handler focus and obstacle focus, and working short sequences to keep you and your dog improving.

Agility Jumping and Weaving Skills
Duration: 6-weeks
Prerequisites: Successful completion of either Puppy Agility 3 class, Intro to Agility class, Beginning Agility class, or similar with instructor approval.
Participant Requirements: This class is only for friendly, non-reactive dogs. Dogs must be 12-months of age or older. Dogs should be familiar with agility equipment and able to sit, down, stay, and come on command even while working in a distracting environment. Handlers must help with the set-up and break-down of equipment on the course.

Course Description: This Agility class will focus on building enthusiasm and motivation for jumping, improving skill and confidence in the weaves, and strengthen your training partnership. Jumping ability is an essential and fundamental part of the sport of Agility. Dogs that understand jumping and are motivated to perform the jumps will put in better performances. This class will focus on developing you and your dog’s understanding of jumping cues and exercises including: extension and collection, changes of direction, turns, and positioning. One of the most unnatural and difficult obstacles in Agility is the weave poles, in this class, there will be an emphasis on building stronger weaving skills. As the dog’s confidence in the weave pols increases, so the speed will increase as well. Jumps will be at the appropriate height for the dog.


Novice Agility

Duration: 6-weeks
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Beginning Agility class or similar with instructor approval.

Participant Requirements: This class is only for friendly, non-reactive dogs. Dogs must be 12-months of age or older. Dogs should be fairly familiar with agility equipment, able to run a short sequence of obstacles off lead, and able to work contact equipment and jumps at full height. Dogs should also be able to sit, down, stay, and come on command even while working in a distracting environment. Handlers must help with the set-up and break-down of equipment on the course.

Course Description: This class will continue to develop teamwork, skills, confidence, and enthusiasm. Teams with goals of moving on to competitive Agility and teams interested in strengthening Agility skills and training partnership are welcome in this class. The goal for this class will be on improving both handling skills and the dog’s ability to navigate sequences with increasing accuracy. Smooth changes of direction, other types of crosses, jumping maneuvers, and added distance from the handler will be introduced. Handlers will begin learning how to analyze obstacle sequences.


Intermediate Agility

Duration: 6-weeks
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Novice Agility class or similar with instructor approval.

Participant Requirements: This class is only for friendly, non-reactive dogs. Dogs must be 12-months of age or older. Dogs should be fairly familiar with agility equipment, able to run a short sequence of obstacles off lead, and able to work contact equipment and jumps at full height. Dogs should also be able to sit, down, stay, and come on command even while working in a distracting environment. Handlers must help with the set-up and break-down of equipment on the course.

Course Description: This class will continue to develop teamwork, skills, confidence, and enthusiasm and is most suited for teams with the goal of moving on to competitive Agility. Teams interested in strengthening Agility skills and training partnership are also welcome in this class. The goal for this class will be on preparing teams for the demands of competition while continuing to improve and increase handling skills and the dog’s ability to navigate sequences. Smooth changes of direction, increasing speed, better lines for better accuracy, discriminations, jumping maneuvers, and added distance from the handler will be included. Other types of crosses and layering may be introduced. Handlers will work on analyzing sequences.

Advanced Agility

Duration: 6-weeks
Prerequisites: This class is for teams currently trialing at the Novice or Open levels, or teams that are trial-ready. Successful completion of Intermediate Agility class or similar with instructor approval.
Participant Requirements: This class is only for friendly, non-reactive dogs. Dogs must be 12-months of age or older. Dogs and handlers should be familiar with agility equipment and able to run a complete course up to 20 obstacles in sequence. Handlers must help with the set-up and break-down of equipment on the course.

Required Materials: Flat buckle collar (no choke, slip, or martingale), 6 ft leash, favorite toy or two, lots and lots of soft training treats (cut into very small pieces), treat pouch or pocket for treats, water and water dish, handlers must wear tennis shoes or sneakers, a crate for your dog is required and (optional) a chair and water for you.

Course Description: This class will continue to develop teamwork and skills needed to compete in Agility with long-term competition goals in mind. Non-trialing teams that are working at this level and are interested in strengthening agility skills and training partnerships are also welcome in this class. The goal for this class will be on preparing teams for the demands of competition while continuing to improve and increase handling skills and the dog’s ability to navigate sequences. Smooth changes of direction, increasing speed, better lines for better accuracy, discriminations, jumping maneuvers, layering, and added distance from the handler will be included. Handlers will work on analyzing sequences.

Master Agility
Duration: 6-weeks
Prerequisites: This class is for teams currently trialing at the Excellent or Masters levels, or teams that are trial-ready. Successful completion of Advanced Agility class or similar with instructor approval.

Participant Requirements: This class is only for friendly, non-reactive dogs. Dogs must be 12-months of age or older. Dogs and handlers should be familiar with agility equipment and able to run a complete course up to 20 obstacles in sequence. Handlers must help with the set-up and break-down of equipment on the course.

Course Description: This class will continue to develop teamwork and skills needed to compete at the Excellent and Master Level in Agility. Full Standard or Jumpers courses are set up each week, and teams will run the full course. Non-trialing teams that are working at this level and are interested in strengthening agility skills and training partnerships are also welcome in this class. The goal for this class will be on preparing teams for the demands of competition while continuing to improve and increase handling skills and the dog’s ability to navigate sequences. Handlers will work on analyzing sequences.

Agility Run-Throughs
Duration: Drop-in Class
Prerequisites: All attendees must be proficient on all full-size obstacles, have completed Intro to Agility and at least one additional Agility course covering foundation skills. If you will use your run-through for practicing remedial contacts or weaves, please let the moderator know.

Participant Requirements: This class is only for friendly, non-reactive dogs. Dogs must be 12-months of age or older. Dogs and handlers should be familiar with agility equipment and able to run a complete course up to 20 obstacles in sequence. Attendees must assist with the set-up and break-down of equipment on the course.

Payment: Payment for drop-in classes is due at the start of class.

Rules of the Field: Please potty your dog(s) often and only in the gravel potty area. Please pick up after your dog(s). Please do not spill treats or use crumbly treats on the Agility field. Only one dog is allowed to run on the field at a time. When not running, all other dogs must be crated (on the field), or leashed (outside the fence), or safely contained in your vehicle.

Course Description: This is a Drop-in class. A full Standard Agility course will be set for the Open or Excellent level with options for Novice handlers and dogs. Walk through and handling discussion occurs at the beginning of class. Optional portions of the set course may be practiced in lieu of running the course.
