Fast CAT Tests

Running, hunting, or chasing are dog’s natural skills. Try Fast CAT to learn how good your dog’s natural abilities are. Fast CAT, Coursing Ability Test, is a low-stress, non-competitive test where each dog runs individually to measure performance. In a Fast CAT Dogs run individually in a timed 100-yard dash, chasing a lure.

How Does Fast CAT Work?

During a Fast CAT each dog separately runs a timed straight race of 100 yards. During Fast CAT tests, dogs chase a lure (a plastic bag or other piece of plastic) on a moving line down a fenced-in course. Dogs are released by one person at the beginning of the course and caught at the end of the course by another. (you will need to bring two leashes with you, one for the release handler and one for the catcher). While most dogs will start running naturally after the lure, it’s important to ensure your dog is physically prepared to compete in this sport.

Scoring: The dog’s time to complete the 100 yard dash is converted into miles per hour (MPHs). A handicap system is applied to a dog’s MPH to determine the number of points earned. The handicap system is based on the height of the dog at its withers.

  • 18″ or greater = 1.0
  • 12″ up to less than !8″ = 1.5
  • Below 12″ = 2.0

Points: are calculated by multiplying MPH x Handicap

Titles: AKC suffix titles are earned based on the number of points earned

  • BCAT = 150 points
  • DCAT = 500 points
  • FCAT = 1,000 points
  • FCAT# = EVERY ADDITIONAL 500 POINTS
